10 Years, Still Going Strong

10:52 pm July 23, 2012

WOW! Dear friends, family and fans! This is it! We have reached our 10 year anniversary thanks to all of you.

Read along for a special one-on-one interview with none other than the Erika Walton…

Q: How does it feel having your company reach its 10-year anniversary?

A: It makes me feel old, but I think its great I have been doing this for 10 years!  It’s bittersweet. It has been amazing that I have been able to so something I am so passionate about for so long! Now I am working on not just having a business, but being successful for myself and for my team!

Q: What do you accredit your success to?

A: Being really creative and a lot of hard work. Not giving up on something that’s my passion.

Q: What has been the hardest challenge to overcome this past decade?

A: Myself. Having to constantly be motivated to do something and be creative and innovative and to not give up. To be with the fashion, yet still be different, so people want my jewelry.

Q: What top three lessons have you learned owning your own company since the age of 15?

A: (1) When you license with a company, don’t go overboard with your first collection. Don’t go big and fancy just because you are excited. (2) Go with my gut and don’t always agree with everyone else’s opinions. (3) The only way to fail is to give up. You can have other people tell you that you are failing, but how you know if you have failed is if you give up and stop doing it.

Q: What has been your greatest victory?

A: Starting the company when I was 15 without taking any sort of business classes or art classes—just going for it without knowing what I was doing just because I was passionate about this. Then, to have the type of success I have in my business, especially in Japan.

Q: Where do you see your company in the next 10 years?

A: The possibilities are endless!

Q: What’s next for Alter Ego by Erika Walton?

A: We are slowly fading out the Alter Ego by Erika Walton brand, which has the one-of-a-kind pieces. They can still be made upon request, but they are priced at higher end and don’t work right now in this economy. Next, we are going to get new licenses and create more fun characters! As we fade out the Alter Ego by Erika Walton brand, we will focus solely on the Erika Walton brand.

Q: What has been the most unpredictable, magically delighted outcome of owning a business thus far?

A: When someone buys a piece and they wear it and it makes their day. Or when they send pictures! The best is when a girl would wear The Original Car Bracelet and she would get so much attention that she would get her first kiss, or first boyfriend, or even find her husband! Another great part has been inspiring other female or young entrepreneurs. They just have to have passion and a drive for whatever it is they want to do. Also, creating an amazing fan base in Japan has been awesome and amazing!

Q: Who has been and/or continues to be your biggest supporters and inspirations?

A: My inspiration always comes from being around people, traveling, the weather, eating—its everything! Doing natural things. That’s what inspires me. The fans are my biggest supporters.

Q: What motto do you live by that helps get you through when things may be tough?

A: Well behaved women rarely make history ;)

Q: What advise do you have for other young entrepreneurs who are unsure of their own dreams?

A: Don’t think, just do it!
